Recyclable snack packs with improved barrier protection research uses PLA from corn

Aimplas, the plastics technology centre based in Spain, has started a project to combine polyglycolic acid (PGA) with modified silica oxide in packaging film, to make a recyclable film with improved barrier properties against oxygen and water.

Current packaging uses metallised barrier materials for snacks, which are very difficult to recycle.

The project, ‘Refucoat’, is also pioneering a new PLA grade from corn waste products, for packaging chicken, cereals and snacks.

Refucoat has brought together twelve partners from five countries, in the European Union Horizon 2020 funded programme.
